Discover the Charms of Withernsea: A Guide to Unforgettable Activities

Embrace Nature’s Beauty
One of the highlights of any visit to Withernsea is its stunning natural environment. The expansive sandy beaches and long wide promenade are perfect for a leisurely afternoon stroll or an invigorating morning run. Take a moment to breathe in the fresh sea air and admire the sweeping views of the horizon. If you're traveling with family, the beach is a fantastic spot for building sandcastles, beach games, or simply soaking up the sun.

Withernsea Pier Towers
An iconic landmark on Withernsea promenade are the Withernsea Pier Towers. Withernsea Pier was constructed between 1875 and 1877 to attract day trippers, but was beset by accidents from the outset. Both storms and ship-caused damage led to the pier being closed by 1893, and it was dismantled by 1903. However the distinctive castellated pier towers on the seafront, are still there to this day. Nearby is a sculpture of the original Pier and the Towers.

Withernsea Lighthouse
Withernsea’s Lighthouse was built in 1892 because of the high number of shipwrecks that were occurring at Withernsea when vessels couldn’t see the lights at either Spurn or Flamborough. Unusually, the octagonal structure was built a quarter of a mile back from the coast, however when the lighthouse was built there were only sand dunes and a mere in front of it. The houses there today were all built after the promenade was extended along the sea front.
The lighthouse shone until July 1st 1976 when, after 82 years, the light was no longer needed. It now opens for people to visit and climb the 144 steps to gain panoramic views of the area.
Attached to it were two cottages, these were the lighthouse keepers’ homes and now contain a museum with displays about the lighthouse and town.

Sea Glass hunting
Searching for sea glass on the beach is a great free activity the whole family can enjoy. What could have once been a jar, glass or vintage medicine bottle after spending time at sea being naturally smoothed by sand and waves – pieces of both glass and pottery can often be found on Withernsea beaches.
The best place to look is on the tide line, particularly among pebbly areas. It’s always easier to go at an outgoing tide as pieces often glisten so they’re easier to spot among the pebbles. The best place to look at Withernsea is to walk north from the Pier Towers beach access all the way to the end of the sea defences. Withernsea is a good place to spot blue sea glass but you often find pieces of clear, green and pieces of smoothed vintage pottery. It will give you materials for a future rainy day too if you look for sea glass craft ideas on Pinterest!
Amusements
Withernsea has a selection of amusements in tradition with English seaside towns. The largest of these is Game King which also houses indoor bowling and an indoor play area – perfect if you get a rain shower while visiting! Fish Trail
The town has a fish trail which starts and ends at the distinctive crab sculpture on the seafront. The location of each fish to spot is linked to the town’s fishing industry.
